| Den | Temperament | Approach (books) | Line / notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Black | Rarest, cunning, lethal, extremely picky | They choose you, or they don’t | Known adults: Tairn, Codagh. Roughly one black a century in lore |
| Blue | Massive, ruthless | Do not approach — withdraw | Gormfaileas line. Sgaeyl is the navy daggertail everyone quotes |
| Green | Intelligent and calm; clubtails used as siege weapons in lore | Lower eyes, wait, never back down | Uaineloidsig / Cruaidhuaine. Feirge, Teine, Cuir |
| Red | Fiery temper; scorpiontails especially quick to anger | Never meet the gaze; left and front if possible | Deigh, Sliseag, Cath, Ghrian, Thoirt |
| Orange | Most unpredictable; apricot to carrot | A risk to approach at Threshing (books) | Fhaicorain. Claidh, Baide, Solas, Glane, Marbh |
| Brown | — | Never show fear | Chradh, Aotrom (swordtail), Aimsir, Fuil |
| Gold / feathertail | Juvenile stage, not a combat den | Kept in the Vale in the books | Every dragon starts here. Feathers, no fire, no rider-carry |
Andarna’s later coloring (Irid) is a series reveal. Do not assume dragonkind.com will print “Irid” or gold on your assignment card unless the official site shows it. Source for adult dens: empyreanseries.com dens/colors.
Tail types (books; also printed on some game cards)
In the novels, tails are weapons and are not locked to one color. Reader-shared Dragonkind cards include a tail type such as swordtail or clubtail. The portraits below are still fan art — they are not photos of those tails on the official site.

Clubtail
Blunt force. Green clubtails are prized siege engines: brains plus a hammer.

Daggertail
Knifelike tip. One flick is enough. Blue daggertails are the rare, ugly subcategory.

Swordtail
A slashing blade. Codagh, bonded to General Melgren, is a black swordtail — the only dragon larger than Tairn.

Morningstartail
Club mass plus dagger spikes. Tairn’s pride and joy. A killing machine with opinions.

Scorpiontail
Venomous barbs. Pair it with a short fuse and Threshing gets expensive.

Feathertail
Juvenile. Not a battlefield tail. Adults trade it for one of the weapons above.
Bonding rules in the novels — not confirmed as website features
- The dragon chooses the rider. That is book canon. The website also frames Threshing as the dragon’s choice; it does not let you pick a den from a menu.
- A relic on the rider’s skin is book canon. Public result cards are a digital assignment (name, tail, sex, age, color, lineage) — not a confirmed in-game relic tattoo.
- Signets in the books are unique magic. Rebecca said website signets come in May. They are not on current reader cards.
- Mated pairs (Tairn and Sgaeyl) and the roughly-three-day separation rule are book physics. Nobody has published that as a Dragonkind.com system.
- If a bonded dragon dies, the rider usually dies — books. Not a documented website ending beyond incineration during Threshing.
FAQ
Dens & tails — questions
Does dragonkind.com use these dens to pick my dragon?
Yarros Ink has not published a scoring table. This page is Empyrean book reference. Reader cards do print a color and a tail; that is not the same as proving Kaori’s class is coded into the site.
How do I approach each color?
Official series notes: greens — lower your eyes, never back down; reds — never meet the gaze, left and front if you can; blues — Kaori says flee; browns — never show fear; oranges — a risk at Threshing; blacks — most discerning. Readers try these in the game. That is unconfirmed as mechanics.
Is gold a den I can roll on the website?
In the books, gold feathertails are juveniles. The public fan color tally of adult cards lists red, blue, green, black, orange, and brown — not gold. Do not assume the site will print Irid or gold unless your own card does.
Are tails locked to a color?
Not in the novels. Book examples mix them (black morningstartail, blue daggertail, brown swordtail). Fan-submitted game cards also mix color and tail.
Will my bond give me a relic or a signet on the site?
Relics on skin are book canon. Public website results are a digital card. Rebecca said signets come in May; they are not on current reader cards.
